Spirit Links!

Please support your Dutch Fork Middle School chapter of SAVE!

We are working to sponsor and host opportunities for students to do a little more than Mix-It-Up at lunch. We will be hosting a board game night, a karaoke competition, and a “Rock-a-thon!”

Dens will buy Spirit Links daily from October 17 to October 26 to compete for a pizza party on October 31! Each link costs fifteen cents. Dens will need to have purchased at least 100 links to be considered in the running for the pizza party.

Please have your den money ready to be collected by a SAVE representative at the beginning of den and sent to Coach Platt’s room to be traded in for links. Links should be assembled much like the links of a chain to show that your den is bonding together to chain up school violence and lock it away!

The group, the only chapter in the Midlands of the nationally recognized violence prevention organization, will detail its mission and provide a mini-workshop on the "Top Five." The workshop will provide parents, students, and community guest the top five tips for internet safety, bullying, conflict management, and multicultural awareness. Save seeks to encourage and empower students with positive life skills while engaging them in educational activities and opportunities to promote good citizenship.

Mix It Up Days

We are celebrating Mix It Up Day on 9/26 and 9/27! The Schedule is attached! Download MixRevised.doc

The reasoning behind mixing it up:

A school listened to young people talk about how hard it can be sometimes to fit in at school. The labeling and grouping on most campuses tends to put you in one group and keep you out of others.

Sometimes, the way other people treat you is tied to how "your group" rates at school.

We understand hanging out with people we think are most like us can be comfortable. But we also understand it can be uncomfortable when you want to hang out with someone new and other people think you should "stick with your own kind."

Nowhere on school campuses are the boundaries of group membership more clearly drawn than in and around the cafeteria.

"They" sit at those tables and "the ..." hang out over there. Everybody knows where you're supposed to hang out. But why does it have to stay that way?

Truth is, things don't have to be how they've always been. That's why we decided to support young people who wanted to create change and started Mix It Up.

Mix It Up believes in the power of youth to create and sustain real change. We want to provide ideas and tools to help you break the walls of division in your school and community.

Welcome!

Welcome to the webpage for the student organization called SAVE! SAVE stands for Students Against Violence Everywhere!

SAVE is a student-initiated program that promotes nonviolence within schools and communities. It provides education about the effects and consequences of violence and helps provide safe activities for students, parents and communities.
SAVE was started by Angela Bynum, a student, and Gary Weart, a teacher, from West Charlotte High School (NC). They initiated the formation of Students Against Violence Everywhere in 1989 in memory of Alex Orange, a student from their school. Alex was shot while trying to break up a fight at a party.
We are trying to work on being PROACTIVE rather than having to wait and be REACTIVE where violence is concerned. If you or your students have any questions, please feel free to point them in my direction.
The first meeting will be September 20th. It will be from 3:20 until 4:00 PM.
If you would like more info about SAVE, please feel free to go to the national website!
